Bangkok Scenery for FS 2004

Please refer to VTBD2004.doc for detailed documentation.

To start with, I want to thank Khun Sukit at www.thaiflight.com for the invaluble help he has given me on the project. He has sent me countless photos of the airport, and is always ready with some good criticism of the project.

I originally created Bangkok scenery for FS2000. This was the first scenery I had ever tried to design, and I have learned many new techniques since then. I had planned on updating the FS2002 version of this scenery, but since then, FS2004 has been released, so I will design the scenery for this version instead.

Features:
* airport completely redesigned from scratch – custom 3-D buildings created,
* AFCAD2 file included,
* Don Muang tollway,
* major city landmark buildings,
* library objects used when necessary,
* VTP roads, parks, golf courses, rivers and lakes,
* elevated helipads located within the city,
* fireworks at Lumphini Park and Sanum Luang for most holidays.

I will post updates to any scenery I create about once per year, if necessary. Otherwise, you can get updates off my website at http://www.martinstrong.com/FS_Project.htm . I don’t see any point in flooding SurClaro with endless postings of the same scenery like some people do. The scenery has been tested, so there shouldn’t be any need for updates or patches. Sometimes people email me asking why I didn’t add their favourite landmark, or whatever. Well, please understand that sometimes there isn’t any reference material. Also, I have to draw a line somewhere, since I can’t model every building, and I still have to worry about framerates. Creating scenery of this magnitude is a lot of work, and I now have 902 megabytes of data (mostly pictures and maps) on my hard drive.

Installation

Unzip to any folder you wish. Make sure “Use folder names” is checked off in Winzip so that the proper directories will be created for you. It should create a directory called “Bangkok 2004” with subdirectories called “scenery” and “texture”. If this doesn’t happen for some reason, then just make a new directory called “Bangkok 2004”, and create sub-directories names “scenery” and “texture”, and place all the *.bgl files into the “scenery” subdirectory and all the *.bmp files into the “texture” subdirectory. Go into FS2K and add the scenery in the usual manner. If you don’t know how to do this, then RTFM or go to www.SurClaro and there are tutorials that tell you how to do this. Flatten and exclude switches are not required for any of this scenery, as they are included in the BGL files.

AFCAD2

I created an AFCAD2 file for use with the scenery. You do not have to manually instal it, since it is in the scenery directory with all the other BGL files. Feel free to edit this file if you like, but if you are creating a new AFCAD2 file by starting with the default VTBD AFCAD2 file, then keep in mind that I added a number of closed taxiways to simulate aprons.

The real life layout of VTBD results in some restrictions in ground traffic handling. The biggest problem is that the only taxiways connecting the two runways aare at the ends of the runways. So, when the AI aircraft land on 21L, and they have to taxi over to theother side of the airport, they have to travel all the way down to the end of the runway, and cross there. This results in some traffic jams when they are trying to cross at the end of the runway that aircraft are takig off from. Also, while taxiing, the aircraft tend to get told to hold short due to aircraft landing on 21L, even though they are not in the way.

The only real workaround is to cheat and put an extra taxiway through the golf course, but I don’t want to do this since it is unrealistic.

There are a number of limitations in the current version of AFCAD2 that can not be worked around. Specifically, the default aprons can not be edited, and taxiway signs can not be changed either.

Other Stuff

This scenery is freeware. You never have to pay to use it. It will always be free from my website at http://www.martinstrong.com/FS_Project.htm . The textures and objects that I have created are copyrighted by me. If you want to use them, just email me at martinstrong@martinstrong.com and I’ll be more than happy to let you do this. If you want the original *.api files for any of the objects, just email me and it’ll be “no problem”. Just remember to give me credit. Do not upload this scenery to other websites. I am tired of seeing my scenery on other peoples sites with “uploaded by: Joe Blow” underneath it. If you feel that this scenery would complement your websites library, then please contact me first, and I will deal with it on a case-by-case basis. Usually it won’t be a problem.
